Aphrodite

Aphrodite is one of the best-known gods in Greek mythology. She was known as the goddess of love, beauty, and desire. Desire means a strong feeling of wanting something. Ancient Greeks believed Aphrodite had the power to affect emotions between people and gods. She lived on Mount Olympus with the other Olympian gods.

There are different myths about Aphrodite’s birth. In one story, she rose from the sea near the island of Cyprus. She arrived on a shell and was carried by waves. Because of this story, she was often linked to the sea. Another story says she was the daughter of Zeus and the goddess Dione. Both versions were known in ancient Greece.

Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, the god of fire and metalwork. Hephaestus was known for making tools and weapons for the gods. Their marriage did not appear often in stories. Aphrodite was also linked in myths to Ares, the god of war. These stories showed how love and conflict could exist together in myths.

Many myths describe Aphrodite helping or troubling both gods and humans. She played a part in the story of the Trojan War. In one myth, she promised the Trojan prince Paris the love of Helen of Sparta. Helen’s later journey to Troy became a cause of the war. Aphrodite was shown protecting Paris and other Trojans during the conflict.

Aphrodite was also connected to symbols of beauty and life. She was often shown with roses, doves, or mirrors. A mirror reflected beauty, which was one of her main roles. Artists and poets in ancient Greece often included her in their work. She appeared in statues, paintings, and poems.

In Roman mythology, Aphrodite was called Venus. The Romans told similar stories about her under this name. Myths about Aphrodite helped explain how ancient people understood love, attraction, and family ties within their world.
