Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. It rises to about 2,918 meters above sea level. The mountain is located in northern Greece, near the border between the regions of Thessaly and Macedonia. It is close to the Aegean Sea. Mount Olympus is a large mountain with many peaks, deep valleys, and rocky slopes. Snow often covers its highest parts during winter.

Mount Olympus is a real geographic place. It is part of a mountain range and has forests, cliffs, and open high areas. Many plants and animals live there. Some species are found only on this mountain. Because of this, the area is protected as a national park. A national park is a place set aside by a country to protect nature.

In ancient Greek culture, Mount Olympus was also known as the home of the gods. According to Greek myths, the twelve main gods lived there. These gods included Zeus, the king of the gods, as well as Hera, Athena, Apollo, and others. The gods were believed to live high above the clouds. These stories were part of Greek religion and were told for many centuries.

The mountain was not climbed in ancient times because people believed it was sacred. Sacred means connected to religion or belief. The first recorded climb to the highest peak, called Mytikas, took place in 1913. Climbers reached the summit using ropes and careful planning. Today, many people hike and climb Mount Olympus using marked paths.

Mount Olympus has many peaks, not just one. Mytikas is the highest, but nearby peaks such as Stefani and Skolio are also very tall. Weather on the mountain can change quickly. Strong winds and fog are common at high levels. Because of this, climbers must be prepared.

Mount Olympus remains an important symbol in Greek history and geography. It connects real natural features with ancient stories. The mountain appears often in books, art, and maps about ancient Greece. It is known as both a physical landmark and a place from mythology.
