How living things get and use food

Nutrition is the process through which living things take in food and use it for energy, growth, and repair. Every living organism, from tiny bacteria to large animals, depends on nutrition to survive. The food we eat contains different substances called nutrients that the body needs to stay alive and healthy. These nutrients help the body build cells, move, and carry out many life processes.

There are six main types of nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Each plays a different role in the body. Carbohydrates, found in foods like rice, bread, and fruits, provide energy. Proteins, from sources like meat, beans, and eggs, help build and repair body tissues. Fats provide energy and help the body absorb some vitamins. Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts but are essential for proper body function. Water is vital because it helps transport nutrients, remove waste, and regulate body temperature.

The way living things get nutrition depends on what they are. Animals, including humans, cannot make their own food, so they eat other organisms. They are called heterotrophs. Plants, on the other hand, make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide through a process called photosynthesis. They are called autotrophs. This difference in how organisms get their nutrients is an important part of how ecosystems work.

Nutrition also involves the process of digestion. In humans and many animals, food is broken down in the digestive system into smaller parts that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. For example, starch in bread is broken down into sugar, and proteins are broken down into amino acids. These small molecules are then used by the body’s cells for energy, growth, and repair.

A balanced diet is one that contains the right amount of all nutrients. If a person lacks certain nutrients, it may cause deficiency diseases. For example, a lack of vitamin D can lead to weak bones, and too little iron can cause tiredness. On the other hand, eating too much of some nutrients, such as fat or sugar, can also cause health problems.

Nutrition is essential not only for individuals but also for the balance of life on earth. It connects all living things through food chains and food webs. By studying nutrition, scientists learn how living organisms grow, maintain health, and adapt to their environments.
