Honey

Honey is a natural, sweet substance produced by bees. Bees make honey from nectar, which is a sugary liquid found inside flowers. Nectar provides energy for bees. Honey is thick and sticky and can range in color from very light yellow to dark brown. The color and taste depend on the types of flowers the bees visit. Honey has been collected and eaten by humans since ancient times.

The process of making honey begins when worker bees collect nectar from flowers. A worker bee uses its long tongue to suck up nectar and store it in a special part of its body called the honey stomach. This stomach is different from the stomach used for digestion. The bee then flies back to the hive. A hive is the home of a bee colony. Inside the hive, the nectar is passed from bee to bee. During this process, the nectar mixes with enzymes. Enzymes are substances that help change one material into another.

After the nectar has been passed between bees, it becomes thicker. The bees then place the liquid into small six-sided cells made of wax. These cells form the honeycomb. Honeycomb is the structure bees build inside the hive. The bees fan the liquid with their wings to remove extra water. As water evaporates, the liquid slowly turns into honey. When the honey is ready, bees seal the cell with a thin wax cover.

Honey is mainly made of sugars, especially glucose and fructose. These sugars come from the nectar of flowers. Honey also contains small amounts of water, minerals, and pollen. Because honey has very little water, it does not spoil easily. This allows honey to be stored for a long time without going bad. Archaeologists have found jars of honey in ancient tombs that were still preserved.

Many kinds of honey exist around the world. The type depends on the flowers available in an area. For example, clover honey comes from clover flowers, while orange blossom honey comes from citrus trees. Bees that live in different environments produce honey with different tastes and colors. Most honey sold to people comes from honeybees, especially the species Apis mellifera.

Honey is used in many foods. It can be eaten by itself or added to bread, tea, or baked goods. In nature, honey serves as stored food for bees. During cold seasons, when flowers are not available, bees eat the honey they have stored to survive. Honey plays an important role in the life cycle of a bee colony.
