Saladin was a powerful Muslim leader who lived during the Middle Ages. He was born in 1137 or 1138 and died in 1193. His full name was Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yusuf ibn Ayyub. He ruled large areas of the Middle East and is best known for his role during the Crusades, a series of wars between Christian and Muslim forces.
Saladin was born in the city of Tikrit, which is in present-day Iraq. He came from a Kurdish family. As a young man, he served in the army under his uncle and later under the ruler Nur ad-Din, a Muslim leader in Syria. Through military service and leadership, Saladin gained experience and trust. In time, he became a commander and governor in Egypt.
In 1171, Saladin became the ruler of Egypt. He later united Egypt with Syria and other nearby regions. This was important because many Muslim lands had been divided before. By bringing them together under one rule, Saladin became one of the most powerful leaders in the region. His rule was based in Cairo, which became an important center of government.
Saladin is most famous for his conflict with the Crusader states. These were Christian-ruled lands formed after earlier Crusades. In 1187, Saladin led his army against Crusader forces at the Battle of Hattin. He won the battle and soon after took control of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was a city sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Saladin allowed Christian residents to leave the city safely after its capture.
After the loss of Jerusalem, European leaders launched the Third Crusade. One of the main Christian leaders was Richard I of England, also called Richard the Lionheart. Saladin and Richard fought several battles but never met face to face. The war ended with an agreement that allowed Christian pilgrims to visit Jerusalem while the city remained under Muslim control.
Saladin died in 1193 in Damascus. He left behind a large empire and a strong reputation as a ruler and military leader. After his death, his empire was divided among family members. Saladin remained an important historical figure in the history of the Middle East and the Crusades.
