The Crusades were a series of military campaigns that took place during the Middle Ages. They occurred mainly between the late 11th century and the late 13th century. Most crusades involved Christian groups from Europe traveling to the eastern Mediterranean. The word crusade comes from a Latin word meaning "cross," which was a symbol used by many participants.
The First Crusade began in 1096. It followed a call made in 1095 by Pope Urban II at a meeting called the Council of Clermont. He asked Christian nobles and soldiers to travel east. One goal was to help the Byzantine Empire. Another goal was to take control of Jerusalem, a city important to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
Large groups of people joined the First Crusade. These included knights, soldiers, and non-combatants. They traveled long distances by land and sea. In 1099, crusader forces captured Jerusalem. After this, crusader states were set up in parts of the eastern Mediterranean. A crusader state was a territory ruled by crusaders.
After the First Crusade, several more crusades followed. These are often numbered by historians. For example, the Second Crusade took place in the mid-1100s. The Third Crusade involved leaders such as Richard I of England, Philip II of France, and Saladin, a Muslim ruler. These later crusades did not permanently secure Jerusalem for the crusaders.
The Crusades also took place in other regions. Some campaigns occurred in the Iberian Peninsula, where Christian kingdoms fought Muslim states. Other crusades were directed toward areas in northern and eastern Europe. Each campaign had different leaders, goals, and outcomes.
The Crusades affected many regions and peoples. Cities were damaged, trade routes changed, and populations moved. Contact between Europe and the Middle East increased. Over time, the crusading movement ended. By the late 1200s, most crusader states had fallen, and the era of major crusades was over.
