Napoleon Bonaparte was a French general and ruler who lived from 1769 to 1821. He became one of the most powerful leaders in Europe during the early 19th century. Napoleon rose to power after the French Revolution, a period when France changed from a monarchy to a republic. He is best known for leading large armies and for ruling France as emperor.
Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica, which had recently become part of France. His family was not rich, but he received an education in military schools. A general is a high-ranking army officer who commands soldiers. Napoleon showed strong skill in planning battles. During the revolutionary wars, he won several important victories for France.
In 1799, Napoleon took control of the French government in a sudden political change called a coup. A coup is the rapid takeover of power by force or pressure. A few years later, in 1804, he crowned himself Emperor of the French. As emperor, he held strong control over the government, the army, and many laws.
Napoleon introduced new laws called the Napoleonic Code. A code is a set of written rules. These laws organized the legal system and applied to many parts of daily life. They spread to other countries that France controlled or influenced. At the same time, Napoleon continued to lead wars across Europe against other major powers, including Britain, Austria, and Russia.
In 1812, Napoleon led a large army into Russia. The campaign failed due to long distances, cold weather, and lack of supplies. After this defeat, many European countries united against him. In 1814, Napoleon was forced to give up power and was sent into exile, which means being forced to live away from one’s country, on the island of Elba.
Napoleon returned to France in 1815 and ruled again for a short time. This period is called the Hundred Days. He was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in present-day Belgium. After this defeat, he was sent into exile again, this time to the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. Napoleon died there in 1821.
