A push or pull that changes motion


Force is a push or a pull that acts on an object. Every time you kick a ball, pull a door, or lift a box, you are using force. It can make objects start moving, stop moving, or change their speed or direction. Forces can be strong or weak, depending on how much effort is applied.

There are many kinds of forces in nature. The most common one we feel every day is gravity, which pulls everything toward the earth. When you drop a pencil, gravity makes it fall. Other examples include the frictional force, which resists motion when two surfaces rub together, and the magnetic force, which makes magnets attract or repel each other. Air resistance is another type of force that slows down objects moving through air, such as a falling feather.

Forces always act in pairs. This means that whenever one object pushes or pulls on another, the second object pushes or pulls back with an equal force in the opposite direction. This idea was explained by the scientist isaac-newton in his third law of motion. For example, when you jump off the ground, your legs push down on the Earth, and the Earth pushes you upward at the same time.

Forces can change how things move. If you push a toy car, it will start rolling. If you push harder, it will move faster. When you stop pushing, friction and air resistance slow it down until it stops. This shows how forces can speed up, slow down, or stop objects in motion.

Scientists measure force using a unit called the newton (N). One newton is the force needed to move a small apple upward against gravity. Measuring forces helps engineers build bridges, airplanes, and machines that can handle weight, pressure, and movement safely.

Forces are part of everything we do—walking, throwing, swimming, or flying. Understanding them helps explain how the world works and how we can use energy and motion more effectively in everyday life.
