British passenger ship that sank in 1912

Titanic was a British passenger ship built in the early 1900s. Its full name was RMS Titanic, where RMS means Royal Mail Ship. It was one of the largest ships in the world at the time. Titanic was designed to carry passengers and mail across the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and North America. The ship became famous because it sank on its first journey in 1912.

Titanic was built by the company Harland and Wolff in Belfast, in what is now Northern Ireland. The ship was owned by the White Star Line, a British shipping company. Construction began in 1909 and took more than two years. Titanic was very large, with multiple decks, large engines, and many rooms for passengers. It used steam engines powered by coal to move through the water.

The ship was divided into sections called watertight compartments. These compartments were designed to keep water from spreading if part of the ship was damaged. At the time, many people believed this made Titanic very safe. The ship had lifeboats, but not enough for everyone on board. This followed safety rules of the time, which were based on ship size rather than passenger numbers.

Titanic began its first voyage on April 10, 1912. It left Southampton in England and stopped at ports in France and Ireland. After these stops, it sailed toward New York City in the United States. On board were more than 2,200 people, including passengers and crew. Passengers were divided into classes based on the type of ticket they bought, known as first class, second class, and third class.

Late on the night of April 14, 1912, Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. An iceberg is a large piece of ice that has broken off from a glacier and floats in the sea. The collision damaged the ship’s hull, allowing water to enter several compartments. Over the next few hours, the ship filled with water. In the early morning of April 15, Titanic sank.

Many people were rescued by lifeboats, but more than 1,500 people died in the disaster. Nearby ships later arrived to help survivors. The sinking led to major changes in ship safety rules. These included having enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew, and improved communication systems at sea. The wreck of Titanic was discovered on the ocean floor in 1985.
