Seafaring people of northern Europe

The Vikings were people who lived in northern Europe from about the late 700s to the early 1100s. Most Vikings came from the lands now called Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These lands are part of a region known as Scandinavia. The Vikings were skilled sailors and often traveled across seas and rivers. They sailed to many places to trade goods, explore new areas, and sometimes settle in foreign lands.

Viking life at home was based on farming, fishing, and craftwork. A craft is something made by hand, such as tools, clothing, or metalwork. Most Viking families lived on small farms. They raised animals, grew crops, and fished in nearby waters. Villages were small, and houses were usually made of wood and had grass roofs. Daily life involved hard work but also gatherings for meals, stories, and celebrations.

One of the best-known parts of Viking history is their sailing. The Vikings built longships, which were strong wooden boats designed for speed. A longship had a shallow bottom so it could travel in both deep seas and shallow rivers. Vikings used these ships to travel across the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and many European rivers. They reached places as far as England, France, Spain, and even North America. These long journeys helped the Vikings trade goods like furs, metal, and amber.

The Vikings took part in many activities when they reached new lands. Some groups traded peacefully with local people. Others raided towns, which means they attacked suddenly to take goods. Raiding was only one part of Viking life but became well known in stories and history. Over time, many Vikings settled in the lands they visited. They built farms and towns and mixed their customs with local traditions. In some places, such as England, Viking culture blended with the culture already there.

Vikings also had their own beliefs and traditions. They followed a religion with many gods, each with a different role. For example, Odin was seen as the chief god, and Thor was the god of storms and strength. Later, many Vikings became Christian as they came into contact with other European peoples. Viking stories, called sagas, told about heroes, voyages, and the world of the gods.

By the late 1000s, Viking activity changed as kingdoms grew stronger in Scandinavia and across Europe. Many Vikings settled into more peaceful lives as farmers, traders, or rulers. Their influence, however, remained. Viking ideas, art, and language helped shape the places where they traveled. Today, Viking history is studied to learn about seafaring, exploration, and life in early northern Europe.
