Systematic killing during World War II

The Holocaust was a period of mass killing that took place during World War II, from 1941 to 1945. It was carried out by Nazi Germany and its allies. The main targets were Jewish people living in Europe. The word genocide means the planned killing of a whole group of people. During the Holocaust, about six million Jewish people were killed.

The Holocaust began after the Nazis gained power in Germany under Adolf Hitler. The Nazi government followed an ideology that claimed some groups were superior and others were dangerous. Jewish people were blamed for social and economic problems. Laws were passed to remove their rights. These laws forced Jewish people out of jobs, schools, and public life.

As World War II continued, Nazi leaders planned wider violence. Jewish people were taken from their homes and moved to ghettos. A ghetto was a closed area in a city where people were forced to live under strict control. Conditions were crowded, and food was limited. From the ghettos, many people were transported by train to camps.

There were different types of camps. Concentration camps were places where prisoners were forced to work under harsh conditions. Extermination camps were built for mass killing. One well-known extermination camp was Auschwitz-Birkenau, located in occupied Poland. People were killed using gas chambers, which were sealed rooms filled with poison gas.

The Holocaust did not affect only Jewish people. Other groups were also targeted. These included Roma people, people with disabilities, Polish civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, and others. Each group was treated as an enemy by the Nazi state. The killings were organized by government offices, police units, and military forces.

The Holocaust ended in 1945 when Allied forces defeated Nazi Germany. Soldiers discovered camps and survivors. After the war, Nazi leaders were tried in court during the Nuremberg Trials. These trials examined crimes committed during the war. The Holocaust remains one of the most documented events in modern history.
