Global war from 1939 to 1945

World War II was a large global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. Many countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas took part. A global war means fighting that happens in many parts of the world at the same time. The war involved millions of soldiers and civilians and caused widespread destruction.

The war began in September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. This action led Britain and France to declare war on Germany. Germany was led by Adolf Hitler. Over time, other countries joined the fighting. These countries formed two main groups. One group was called the Allies, which included Britain, the Soviet Union, and later the United States. The other group was called the Axis powers, which included Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Fighting took place on land, at sea, and in the air. In Europe, Germany occupied many countries during the early years of the war. In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union. In Asia and the Pacific, Japan expanded its control over many areas. In December 1941, Japan attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This attack led the United States to enter the war.

World War II involved new types of weapons and methods. Tanks, aircraft, submarines, and long-range bombs were used widely. Cities were often bombed from the air. Many civilians were affected by shortages of food and supplies. During the war, Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust, which was the organized killing of millions of Jews and other groups. This happened mainly in occupied Europe.

The war began to turn against the Axis powers after 1942. Important battles were fought at places such as Stalingrad in the Soviet Union and El Alamein in North Africa. In June 1944, Allied forces landed in France during the D-Day invasion. This allowed them to move toward Germany from the west. In the Pacific, the United States and its allies moved closer to Japan through a series of battles.

In 1945, the war ended. Germany surrendered in May 1945 after Allied forces entered Berlin. Japan continued fighting until August 1945. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. An atomic bomb is a very powerful weapon that uses energy from atoms. Japan surrendered soon after. World War II officially ended in September 1945.
