Benito Mussolini was an Italian political leader who ruled Italy for more than twenty years. He was born on 29 July 1883 in Predappio, a small town in northern Italy. Mussolini became head of the Italian government in 1922 and remained in power until 1943. His rule took place between World War I and World War II, during a time of political change in Europe.
Mussolini grew up in a working-class family. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a schoolteacher. As a young man, Mussolini worked as a teacher and later as a journalist. A journalist is a person who writes news and opinion articles. He became involved in politics and joined the Italian Socialist Party. Over time, he left the party and formed his own political movement.
After World War I, Italy faced economic problems and social unrest. Many people were unhappy with the government. Mussolini led a group called the Fascist Party. Fascism is a political system where power is held by one strong leader, opposition is limited, and the state controls many parts of public life. In October 1922, Mussolini and his supporters carried out the March on Rome. This event pressured the king, Victor Emmanuel III, to appoint Mussolini as prime minister.
Once in power, Mussolini changed the government step by step. By the mid-1920s, Italy had become a one-party state. Other political parties were banned. Newspapers were controlled by the government. Elections no longer offered real choices. Mussolini took the title Il Duce, which means "the leader" in Italian. He used speeches, symbols, and public events to present himself as the central figure of the state.
Mussolini’s government controlled many areas of life. The state organized youth groups, labor groups, and cultural activities. Large public projects were carried out, such as road building and land drainage. At the same time, freedom of speech was limited, and opponents were arrested or sent into exile. Italy also followed an expansion policy. In 1935, Italian forces invaded Ethiopia, a country in East Africa.
During the late 1930s, Mussolini formed a close alliance with Adolf Hitler of Germany. When World War II began in 1939, Italy first remained neutral. In 1940, Mussolini brought Italy into the war on Germany’s side. The war went badly for Italy. In 1943, Mussolini was removed from power by the king and arrested. In 1945, near the end of the war, Mussolini was captured and killed by Italian resistance fighters.
