Operation Overlord

Operation Overlord was the name given to the Allied invasion of western Europe during World War II''. The goal was to land large armies in France and push German forces back. At that time, much of western Europe was under German control. Operation Overlord was planned by Allied leaders from several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The operation began on June 6, 1944. This day is often called D-Day''. D-Day means the day when a military operation begins. Thousands of ships crossed the English Channel from Britain to France. Soldiers landed on beaches in the Normandy region of northern France. The main landing areas were named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

The invasion was led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was the Supreme Allied Commander. This means he was in charge of Allied forces in Europe. Many other commanders played important roles, including Bernard Montgomery. Before the invasion, the Allies used deception. Deception means tricking the enemy. They created false plans to make Germany think the invasion would happen in another place.

The landings on the beaches were very difficult. German forces had built strong defenses along the coast. These defenses included bunkers, mines, and barbed wire. Some beaches, especially Omaha Beach, saw heavy fighting. Despite these challenges, Allied troops slowly moved inland. Airborne soldiers were also dropped behind enemy lines to secure bridges and roads.

After the beach landings, the Allies brought more soldiers, vehicles, and supplies into France. This process is called a buildup. Over several weeks, the Allies gained control of Normandy. In August 1944, Paris was liberated. Liberation means freeing a city or country from enemy control. The success of Operation Overlord allowed the Allies to advance further into Europe.

Operation Overlord was one of the largest military operations in history. It involved land, sea, and air forces working together. The invasion marked the beginning of the end of German control in western Europe. Fighting continued for many months after the invasion, but the Allies now had a strong position on the continent.
