Historic fortress beside the River Thames

The Tower of London is a large stone fortress located in central London, beside the River Thames. It was built to protect the city and show royal power. Construction began in 1066, shortly after the Norman Conquest of England. The Tower has been used for many purposes over time, including a royal home, a prison, a place to store weapons, and a treasury.

The central building of the Tower is called the White Tower. It was built by William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England. The White Tower was designed as a strong keep, meaning a secure inner building used for defense. Its thick walls and high position made it difficult to attack. Over the centuries, additional walls and towers were added, creating the large complex seen today.

The Tower of London is widely known for its role as a prison. Many important people were held there, including nobles and royal family members. Some prisoners were accused of treason, which means acting against the king or country. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, was imprisoned and executed at the Tower in 1536. Not all prisoners were treated the same, and some lived in more comfortable rooms.

The Tower also served as a royal residence during the Middle Ages. Kings and queens stayed there, especially during times of danger. It was also used to store valuable items. The Crown Jewels, which include crowns, swords, and ceremonial objects used in royal ceremonies, are kept at the Tower. These items are protected by guards and strong security.

Another well-known feature of the Tower is its guards, called the Yeoman Warders, often known as Beefeaters. They are responsible for guarding the Tower and guiding visitors. Ravens, large black birds, are also kept at the Tower. A long-held tradition says that if the ravens ever leave, the kingdom will fall. Because of this, ravens are carefully looked after.

Today, the Tower of London is no longer used as a prison or palace. It is a historic site and museum open to the public. It is managed by an organization that protects important historic buildings. The Tower remains one of the most famous landmarks in England and is recognized as a World Heritage Site.
