First emperor of unified Germany

Wilhelm I was the first Emperor of the German Empire. He was born on 22 March 1797 in Berlin, which was part of the Kingdom of Prussia. He was a member of the Hohenzollern family, a royal family that ruled Prussia for many years. Wilhelm I became emperor in 1871, after the unification of Germany. His reign marked the beginning of a new German state.

Before becoming emperor, Wilhelm I served as King of Prussia. He became king in 1861 after the death of his brother, Frederick William IV. As king, Wilhelm I focused on strengthening the army. This caused political conflict with the Prussian parliament, which disagreed about military spending. During this period, Wilhelm I relied on his prime minister, Otto von Bismarck, to manage government affairs.

Otto von Bismarck played a central role in the unification of Germany. He used diplomacy and wars to bring together many German states under Prussian leadership. These conflicts included wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. The most important was the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. After Prussia and its allies defeated France, German leaders declared the creation of the German Empire.

In January 1871, Wilhelm I was proclaimed emperor in the Palace of Versailles, near Paris. This event symbolized the success of German unification. As emperor, Wilhelm I held the title kaiser, which is the German word for emperor. The German Empire was a federal state, meaning it was made up of smaller states that kept some local powers. Wilhelm I remained both emperor and King of Prussia.

Wilhelm I did not rule alone. He worked closely with Bismarck, who served as chancellor, the head of the government. Bismarck controlled most daily political decisions. Under their leadership, Germany grew quickly in industry, population, and military strength. Railways expanded, factories increased, and cities grew larger during this time.

Wilhelm I died on 9 March 1888 in Berlin. He was succeeded by his son, Frederick III, who ruled for only a short time. Wilhelm I is remembered as the first emperor of a unified Germany. His reign laid the foundation for the German Empire that lasted until 1918.
