Founder of modern Turkey

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a Turkish military leader and statesman. He was born in 1881 in the city of Salonica, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at that time. Today, this city is called Thessaloniki and is in Greece. Mustafa Kemal later received the name Atatürk, which means "Father of the Turks." He became the first president of the Republic of Turkey and served from 1923 until his death in 1938.

Atatürk was trained as an army officer. He attended military schools and became known for his leadership skills. During World War I, he played an important role in the defense of Ottoman lands. One of his best-known actions took place during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. This was a military campaign fought between the Ottoman Empire and Allied forces. His success there made him widely known within the empire.

After World War I, the Ottoman Empire began to collapse. Large parts of its land were occupied by foreign powers. Mustafa Kemal organized resistance against these occupations. This period is known as the Turkish War of Independence, which lasted from 1919 to 1923. He led nationalist forces that fought against foreign armies and the old Ottoman government. The war ended with the creation of a new, independent state.

In 1923, the Republic of Turkey was officially established. Mustafa Kemal became its first president. The old Ottoman sultanate was abolished. A sultanate is a system ruled by a sultan, or monarch. Atatürk led the country as a republic, which is a state governed by elected representatives instead of a monarch. The capital city was moved from Istanbul to Ankara.

As president, Atatürk introduced many changes to Turkey’s government and society. These changes are often called reforms, which means planned improvements. He worked to separate religion from government. New laws replaced older religious laws. The Latin alphabet was adopted instead of the Arabic script. Clothing rules were changed, and modern education systems were expanded. These actions aimed to create a modern, secular state.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk died on November 10, 1938, in Istanbul. He is remembered as the founding leader of Turkey. His image appears on Turkish money, and his name is found on streets, schools, and public buildings across the country. Each year, his death is marked with moments of silence throughout Turkey.
