Winston Churchill was a British political leader who lived from 1874 to 1965. He served as prime minister of the United Kingdom during important periods of the 1900s. A prime minister is the head of government in Britain. Churchill is mainly known for leading the country during World War II, when Britain faced great danger from Nazi Germany.

Churchill was born in England into a well-known family. His father was a politician, and his mother was American. As a young man, Churchill worked as a soldier and a reporter. A reporter is a person who writes news stories. He traveled to many places and wrote books and articles about his experiences.

Churchill entered politics in the early 1900s. He became a member of Parliament, which is Britain’s law-making body. Over many years, he held different government jobs. These included positions related to the navy, the army, and finance. His political career had successes and failures, and he was not always popular.

In 1940, during World War II, Winston Churchill became prime minister. At that time, Germany had taken control of much of Europe. Britain was under threat of invasion. Churchill gave many speeches to the public. These speeches were meant to explain the situation and describe the government’s plans. His words were widely shared by radio and newspapers.

Churchill worked closely with other Allied leaders during the war. The Allies were countries fighting against Germany, Italy, and Japan. Important Allied leaders included Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union. Together, they discussed military plans and the future of Europe.

After the war ended in 1945, Churchill was voted out of office. He later returned as prime minister from 1951 to 1955. In addition to politics, Churchill was a writer and historian. In 1953, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his historical writing. He died in 1965 and was given a state funeral.
