Former socialist state in Eastern Europe

The Soviet Union was a country that existed from 1922 until 1991. Its full name was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It was created after the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War. The Soviet Union covered a very large area and included parts of Eastern Europe, northern Asia, and Central Asia. Its capital city was Moscow.

The Soviet Union was formed after the Bolsheviks won the Russian Civil War. The Bolsheviks were a political group led by Vladimir Lenin. In 1922, several regions joined together to form a new state. These regions were called republics, which are areas with their own local governments. At its height, the Soviet Union had fifteen republics, including Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

The government of the Soviet Union was based on socialism. Socialism is a system in which major industries and land are owned and controlled by the state. The Soviet Union was ruled by one political party, the Communist Party. The leader of the party held great power. Important leaders included Vladimir Lenin and later Joseph Stalin. Elections were held, but only one party was allowed to rule.

The Soviet Union went through rapid changes in industry and agriculture. Factories, mines, and farms were placed under state control. The government created plans to guide production and development. These plans affected daily life, including where people worked and lived. Education and science were also strongly supported by the state.

During World War II, the Soviet Union played a major role in fighting Nazi Germany. In the Soviet Union, this conflict is known as the Great Patriotic War. The war caused enormous damage and loss of life. After the war, the Soviet Union became one of the world’s two main superpowers, along with the United States. A superpower is a country with strong political, military, and economic influence.

From the late 1940s, the Soviet Union and the United States were rivals in a long period called the Cold War. This was a time of tension without direct large-scale fighting between the two sides. In the late 1980s, the Soviet government introduced reforms. These changes weakened central control. In 1991, the Soviet Union officially dissolved, and its republics became independent countries.
