Major mountain range of Europe

The Alps are one of the largest and most important mountain ranges in Europe. They stretch across eight countries: France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, and Monaco. The Alps form a natural barrier between northern and southern Europe. They are known for high peaks, deep valleys, and long mountain chains.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, which stands on the border between France and Italy. It is about 4,808 meters tall. Many other peaks in the Alps rise above 4,000 meters. A peak is the pointed top of a mountain. These high elevations shape weather patterns and affect how people travel through the region.

The Alps were formed millions of years ago by the movement of Earth’s crust. Earth’s crust is the outer layer of the planet. When large land plates pushed together, the ground folded upward and created mountains. This process is slow and continues even today. As a result, the Alps are still changing in small ways over time.

The climate of the Alps changes with height. Lower slopes often have mild summers and cold winters. Higher areas are much colder and often covered with snow and ice all year. Glaciers are large masses of slow-moving ice found in the highest parts of the Alps. Many major European rivers, such as the Rhine, Rhône, and Po, begin in the Alps.

People have lived in and around the Alps for thousands of years. Mountain passes allowed travel and trade between regions. A mountain pass is a low area between peaks that makes crossing easier. Towns and villages developed in valleys where farming was possible. Roads, tunnels, and railways now connect Alpine regions to the rest of Europe.

Today, the Alps remain an important natural region. They contain forests, lakes, and many kinds of plants and animals adapted to mountain life. Large cities lie near the edges of the Alps, while smaller communities exist within them. The Alps continue to shape geography, climate, and settlement patterns in Europe.
