The Seven Years' War was a major war that lasted from 1756 to 1763. It involved many of the strongest countries of the time. Fighting happened in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. Because battles took place on several continents, it is sometimes described as one of the first global wars.
The causes of the war came from earlier conflicts. European countries competed for land, trade, and influence. In Europe, tensions grew between Prussia and Austria over control of the region called Silesia. In North America, Britain and France argued over land and trade. These disputes led countries to form alliances. An alliance is an agreement between countries to support each other.
Two main sides took part in the war. On one side were Great Britain and Prussia. On the other side were France, Austria, Russia, and several other countries. Each side hoped to protect its lands and weaken its rivals. Kings and governments directed large armies and navies. A navy is a military force that fights at sea.
In Europe, many battles were fought in Germany and nearby regions. Frederick II of Prussia'', also called Frederick the Great, led Prussian forces. His army faced attacks from several directions at once. Although Prussia was smaller than some enemies, it managed to survive the war. Control of land often changed as armies moved and fought.
In North America, the conflict is known as the ''French and Indian War''. British and French forces fought over colonies and trade routes. Native American groups were involved on both sides. Battles included attacks on forts and settlements. At sea, British and French ships fought to control important ports and shipping paths.
The war ended in 1763 with two main agreements. The Treaty of Paris settled fighting between Britain, France, and Spain. France lost much of its land in North America to Britain. The Treaty of Hubertusburg''' ended fighting in Europe between Prussia and Austria. Prussia kept control of Silesia. The Seven Years' War changed borders and power relations around the world and ended a long period of fighting between major European states.
